(but you won’t be able to get refunded if you cancel your trip).
Travelling in France:
There are a few questions that should be asked by all students to themselves before coming into France.
1) Am I going to travel a lot in France?
2) How do I go around in France?
3) What all options do I have?
4) Which are the cheapest, fastest and the best modes of travel around France?
5) What all things should I know about travel in France?
Well lets start with the modes of travel available in France.
1) First of all, we have the world famous TGV's (Train Grande Vitesse) which are one of the
fastest trains in the world, running at a top speed of 285 kmph. It is a great experience to
travel in one of these trains and what is best about them is, well, the speed.
Other train options are the TER, Corail, etc. which are cheaper but slower. There are ways to
get cheaper tickets for the TGV, which will be discussed later.
2) The second thrilling option is to hire a car and travel by the roads. The best part about the
roads of France is the scenic beauty and the roads that seem endless, but you better keep a
check on your speed because if you cross the speed limit then you will have to pay a minimum
of 60 Euros fine. Driving is exhilarating, till I personally ended up paying 150 Euros as fine for speeding...
3) Another option is co-voiturage, i.e. sharing a trip with someone else in their car. It is
the cheapest and one of the best way of traveling in between nearby cities and sometimes even long distances.
4) There are buses too, running between important cities, but they are very expensive and frankly a huge waste of time.
So lets talk about the various modes of transport:
TGV
The SNCF group has launched the TGV's all around Europe. They have provided certain facilities
for traveler's who are regular, youngster's, aged people, etc. The thing that matter's to us students is the CARTE 12-25
CARTE 12-25:
For those of you who don't know French, the CARTE 12-25 is spelt as "CARTE DOUZE VINGT-CINQ"
Basically, this card is meant for travelers in the age group of 12-25, which most of the students
are. This card is a must for those of you who would like to save money on traveling between cities
in France. This card costs 49 Euros and is valid for one year, but trust me it is worth the money,
in fact by the end of the year, if you have traveled a lot via the TGV, you will easily save between
500-1000 Euros. This card gives you a discount on TGV or TER travel and sometimes Corail too,
starting from 25% to as high as 60%.
For people who are traveling for the first time in France, the most convenient place for you to
get a carte 12-25 is the Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris. There is a SNCF terminal just near
the Terminal 2E of CDG airport. If you cant find it, just ask the security people or any random
person (All French understand SNCF) about the SNCF terminal. For those of you who have already
reached their respective destinations, don’t worry, just go to your respective city's TGV stations and ask for the SNCF counter.
Once you reach the terminal and are standing in the line waiting for your turn to come, get a couple of things ready:
1) Passport
2) Visa
3) Birth Certificate (Preferably translated in French)
3) Housing certificate or at least the address proof of the place where you will be staying. (Explained below)
You don't need a housing certificate if you just want the CARTE 12-25, but it is required for your S'MILES card.
Ok, let's talk about that.
The S'MILES card is a complimentary card that you get upon signing up for the CARTE 12-25.
The advantage of this is that whenever you book a ticket for the TGV, you get an option of
using this S'MILES card, which gives you a certain number of s'miles depending upon the
amount of your purchase of the SNCF products (for eg: TGV tickets). When you have accumulated
a certain number of s'miles you can use those to buy free tickets or can use them in casinos, etc.
BUT the s'miles card is sent via a courier to your residence after about a month of buying
the CARTE 12-25. So this is where you require your housing permit or at least the address of your place of residence.
You have to remember to mention that you need a S'MILES card too along with your CARTE 12-25
because frankly, the person sitting on the counter is not a salesman or a call center operator,
he/she will only give you what you ask for. In France, if you want things, you have to ask for them.
Once you have the CARTE 12-25, you can buy the tickets to where you want to go at least 25%
cheaper than those without the card.
Now there are 2 ways to buy tickets for TGVs:
i) ONLINE:
To buy the ticket online you follow the link below:
http://www.voyages-sncf.com/
This is the SNCF site which allows you to book trains, cars (voiture), flights (vol) and hotels.
But it is preferable to buy only the train tickets from this site, because you can find much
cheaper and better flights, cars and hotel rooms.
Once on this site, you will be automatically directed to the following page:
For those who think they can get it done in a simple and faster way, just click on the British
flag at the bottom left corner. After clicking through a few more links you realize that you end up
on the same page above which is in French.
Once on this site you fill up the following details:
a) Depart: This is the departure city. It so happens that, most of the times the place of your
departure may not be mentioned in the list (for ex: The TGV train station in Metz is called
“Metz Ville” but it is not mentioned in the list. So don’t worry just type in your city name (But be sure about it!!!)
b) Arrive: This is the city of your arrival. The same goes for this too.
c) Aller le: It is the date of your travel.
d) A partir de: This is your desired time of departure. If you want a wide range of departure
timings, just start with anytime in the early morning, say, 07h00 (this is the French way of
writing time). Later when they show you the list of trains, you will see all the trains
available from 07h00 till midnight, along with the duration and rates. Sometimes there are connecting trains too.
e) Retour le: Returning date.
f) a partir de: return time.
g) Choose Aller-Retour if you want to book a return ticket too.
h) Choose the number of passengers
i) For those of you who have taken the CARTE 12-25 click on the tab “Recherche avancee”.
j) In the drop down menu of Age Du passenger choose “12-25 ans”
k) In the menu of Carte et Abonnement choose “CARTE 12-25”
l) If you have received your S’Miles card then in the drop down menu of Programme de fidélité choose
“S’Miles SNCF” and write down the card number in the box that appears below. For others just the leave this option blank.
m) Sélectionnez le pays de réception ou de retrait des billets : This means « Select the country of receiving or retrieving the ticket.
n) Once all that is done, click on Rechercher.
Once you have finished the above procedure, the rest is simple. Choose the train that suits your
timing. Click on “trains suivants” for checking trains following the last one on screen. You have
an option of choosing either a First or second class trains. Generally, there is a considerable
difference between the rates of these two, but if you are lucky, at times the difference is just
a few euros, so keep an eye out for that. It is fun traveling in first class.
Once you have selected the train you can also choose the direction you want to be facing, click on
“Choiser ma Place”, then in the first drop down menu click on “Fenetre” which means window and in
the second one click on “Sens de la marche” which means in the direction of travel. If you are
booking your tickets much prior to your date of departure then you may be able to choose your
place, but generally if you book it just before the date of departure you wont get much choice.
After selecting all these things, you click on “Valider cet aller” and you come on to another page
which asks you whether you want any insurance on your travel. Generally the insurance amount is just
a couple of euros, and there is no harm in taking it if you want. But you better read the policy first.
If you have chosen a wrong train then you can click on “Supprimer” and you will have to start the whole process again.
After clicking on the “Valider Votre reservation” you come on to the ticket retrieval and payment page.
There are 3 different ways of retrieving your ticket:
a) Borne Libre Service :
b) Envoi gratuit par courier
c) Gare ou boutique
